Danny and I are high school sweethearts and never had any other relationship in the past. We were together for 13 years before we got married. We both attended UST in college and in med school. I can say that our love story is genuine because we’re not just lovers, but we are also best friends. And in love, you really need to be good friends more than lovers because that will be the best foundation of a good marriage.
For years we celebrated our anniversaries either by eating in a nice restaurant or simply hanging out. But the important thing that we don’t miss during our anniversary is to go to church and thank God for another year full of love.
But that routine changed during our twelfth anniversary.
It was morning of October 29, 2012 and I came from my hospital duty. He picked me up from work and went home to prepare to attend mass. But before leaving my apartment he said, “Honey, bring your camera. We will go somewhere.” He told me that since I don’t have a shot of the sunset yet, we will go see one. After hearing mass, he drove north while I slept. He eventually woke me up as the view of the Subic Yacht Club welcomed my eyes. I melted when he said, “Here we are! We’re going to go sailing.”
One thing about Danny is he doesn’t like pictures of him being taken. So everytime I asked him to smile at the camera, he didn’t obey. I was just surprised when he said, “Honey, take pictures of me with the sunset.” Eager with his request, I put my camera in shutter mode. Until one shot, I stopped and almost dropped my camera. While focusing my lens he took something out of his pocket–a ring. I lost my senses. My world stopped and the only words that came out of my mouth were, “What’s that?”
Danny then said, “Honey, will you marry me?”
I remembered I cried before I said, “Of course, I will.”
